Classics Fiction Super Set Golden Deer Classics edition by Lewis Carroll Mark Twain Lew Wallace Alexandre Dumas Daniel Defoe Golden Deer Classics h p Lovecraft Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

How does one rate a bundle of bundled classics? The books, of course, are (mostly) all 5-star great, but each is great in its own way and for different reasons within its own genre. The better question, perhaps, is this Is this HUGE bundle the best way to acquire them all?

This IS a rather awkward, apples-to-oranges mix of fantasy, western, horror, Defoe, Dumas, and others. There is no unifying principle or theme. Will you be able to remember a year from now that the D'Artagnan series (for example) is included in this particular bundle rather than in some other equally large and nondescript bundle of great works stored on your cloud? Yes, it's initially very convenient to get so much in a single download, but in the future will locating and retrieving any one item within it (amidst all your other content) be equally as convenient?

Bundles serve a sound purpose when there is some unifying principle on which their content is based. Defoe and Lewis Carroll bundles, as separate entities (for instance), ARE convenient to locate and retrieve; merely search your holdings under each of their names. That's not so easy when they are hidden among many other works by many other authors in bundle titles that give no clue as to their specific content. Likewise, a bundle of books reflecting a common genre is more convenient separately than buried in a larger bundle of mixed genres.

All that notwithstanding, one must also wonder if the TOC permits access to specific chapters as well as to main titles. Indeed, is there an active TOC, and how user-friendly is it? In the works themselves, are original italics indicated? Often they are just totally ignored. Who are the translators of foreign works? Are they sound? (Dumas is often very poorly "translated" -- as in "butchered.") Such questions cannot necessarily be answered by merely downloading a sample, because only the very first items will be shown; problems within all the rest may not be revealed until after one has acquired and downloaded the complete package. How long will the download of a massive bundle take? Will it work on your device -- or cause it to freeze?

More is not always better when "more" refers more to quantity rather than to quality. Yes, the individual works are great, but is this massive bundle of them equally as great? Is it the best way to acquire public domain items which, individually, may easily be obtained for free, sometimes in better formatted or better translated versions? Some foreign authors have their major works represented by more than one public domain translation; have the editors of this bundle made the best choice among them?

I much prefer smaller bundles whose titles reflect their content. And I want such bundles to present the works as their authors intended them to be, with italics (where the author chose to emphasize certain words), and in the case of translations, as close in English as possible to the original language (not abridged or adapted). Super huge bundles like this seldom get everything right -- and insofar as I have examined most, if not all, the separate bundles included in this super bundle-of-bundles, I know that to be the case here. They ARE imperfect, some more than others. How much of a stickler for perfection are you? Are you willing to compromise on quality for the sake of quantity?

Nevertheless, despite my misgivings, given the stature of the works themselves, I have merely deducted one star to signify this bundle's varied imperfections -- and to be fair, none is so egregious so as to totally disqualify the entire set. You'll have to decide if, less than perfect and less than truly convenient as it is, this enormous bundle is (to YOU) really something you need or want to download.

Remember, each and every title included here is available individually in free public domain editions in the that you can download at your leisure whenever you may choose to read them. (It's not like you HAVE to download them all at once.) And there are many thousands of others -- equally as fabulous and totally free -- all available to you. To see them, simply type "free books classics" in the searchbox and select the ones YOU really want to read. You will then realize why super-huge bundles like this are not necessarily as desirable as, at first, they may seem.
A great set of stories. While I have read a few of these books, I have not read all of them. For 99 cents, you can't go wrong. So with that said, I bid you Happy Reading.
