Dublin, Good Friday, 1916.

Kidnapped and held at gunpoint by his former IRB comrades, Bulmer Hobson, the misunderstood antihero of 1916, denounces the ill-fated Easter Rising he had tried to prevent. While his captors joke about shooting him and dumping his body on the railroad tracks, his terrified fiancée roams the chaos-ravaged city in search of him. Fifteen years of political rivalry, international conspiracy, botched love affairs, and taunting promises of glory culminate in a bloody showdown.

Once branded 'the most dangerous man in Ireland' by the police, Hobson is about to be deleted from history. Based on historical accounts, Martyrs and Traitors is an intimate glance into the conflicted and shattered heart of Ireland's discredited patriot.

A Great Historical Novel

Martyrs and Traitors is a great historical novel, portraying Irish life and nationalism a century ago. I loved it. The writing is great, the characterizations (both of men AND women) are great, and so is the story Neary tells. Bulmer Hobson serves well as a protagonist, all the more so because he is not the individual a more conventional novelist would pick. Hobson is a neglected, overlooked hero who faded into obscurity because of the position he took on Irish independence and how to achieve it. For that reason, he provides a crucial lens through which to view this period.

There are so many other great characters, for example the tragic Edie and Isabel among the women and other heroic striving figures among the men. The author did a great deal of research in preparing for this novel, and it shows. Martyrs and Traitors would make a great movie, and even better, a great TV series, because there is so much here. Don't miss this one.

Martyrs and Traitors A Tale of 1916 (Audible Audio Edition) Marina Julia Neary Colin Grube Inc All Things That Matter Press Books Reviews

Ghost RunnersM.J. Neary is the author of a thoroughly researched, tantalizing history about Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century. It is the dawn of a renewed Irish nationalism with new voices to the old conflicts that have not been settled. One can imagine the lyrical brash of male laments to tell this tale in the pubs where so many hearts are broken--so much destruction of dreams. Sort of reminiscent of our own- Neary's narration defies prescription. She can slash gender bias in an instant with her own brand of historical perspective tempered with both truth and wisdom. Her sad one liners have a cutting clarity that betrays all but the genuine heart. A male character suffers from pain `inflicted' by a `love of woman.' I never heard heartache described quite that way. `Inflicted' is the cut; it is savage and final as Neary, does not need to mince words. Take another- Pearse, who was " inclined to deify women, interpreted Eveleen's rejection of his love as an act of self-sacrifice."

Those are the salvos that are thrust out and never brought to consciousness. By her microscopic analyses, Neary raises her voice in the small of the day to day to create a vision that we still idealize, and that does not go away. Reality of the past becomes the nostalgia of the modern day, and Neary has captured both with an often lyrical, but always insightful pen. We know Bulmer lived because he suffered and because he dared to dream. Though she would fie on romanticism with a viper's sword , Neary transcends her genre and goes beyond tough times to create a perfect world. What more can we ask of any author other than to deliver us fresh at our doors the unbridled truths about world's no longer here. That attempt, alone, is only for the romantic--that it matters to us means the author has succeeded.

Her creations, though, are all too human and suffer the martyr's cross. But they do not stay dead forever. Neary has made Lazarus rise with the subliminal sounds of the drums. There is music in the cadence of her rhymes, of her passion, and though her voice often tries to reach our minds, it is the music that we remember because it, and she, are not content until we remember the stuff of revolution--all the glory and the lies--yes traitors and martyrs often always lie together and touch the soul.

. "He did not feel inclined to stay for his own funeral"...you see, that is Neary who defies death for a man's right to choose...his dream.

And the best" ten fiddles were still at the manufacturer's shop when the explosion happened." I think that is the title of my five star review.
"My lifelong quest is to dig up lost treasures, literary and historical, and bring into light those figures that have remained in the shadow for whatever reason ...this novel is my hymn for all prematurely extinguished stars."

This quote from Marina Julia Neary's bio, although placed at the end of the novel, is a perfect place to begin my thoughts on it. `Martyrs and Traitors' is a complex and character driven historical fiction that goes below the textbook surface of historic events and the people involved in them, and highlights the clash of cultures and motives, foolishness and courage that so often underlie them. Its theatrical, dialogue-rich style employs a multitude of players in the lead up to the Irish Easter Rebellion of 1916, its dramatic and bloody realization, and the subsequent building of the new Irish state, weaving their stories into that of the Quaker Ulsterman and atypical revolutionary, Bulmer Hobson. Too often a mere footnote in history, Hobson was somewhat of an anti-hero, awkward in himself yet (often unrealistically) determined in his beliefs, at times his own worst enemy, brought up to avoid violence but at one point earning the British government's label of "The most dangerous man in Ireland".

Ms. Neary cleverly and unsentimentally develops Hobson's relationships, especially with the women who come and go in his life, including his mother, sister, various lovers, wife, and finally his daughter. Although the novel focuses on Hobson, Ms. Neary leaves us in no doubt that she meant to bring these women to the forefront of the social and political story of Ireland as well as Hobson's, making each of them significant characters in their own right, and offering, for me, some of the most compelling reading in the novel.

Ms. Neary nimbly makes you think and dream, believe and question, smile and cower, rise and fall right along with the company of `Martyrs and Traitors'. As if directing a movie or play, and with literary agility, she manages a large cast that is initially (and purposefully) disconnected but slowly through integrated historical detail, absorbing conversations, layered characterizations, and plot dexterity, tells a hypnotizing story.

This was a challenging novel to read, for its length and intersecting plots and their many accomplices, but very satisfying, engaging me more and more with each chapter. In the end it proved entertaining and energizing, rewarding my intellect and stirring my sense of the powerful ambiguity and subjectivity of life and its causes. A highly recommended read!
